The owners of this beautiful traditional farmhouse in Jersey embarked on an extensive renovation project with the aim of modernising their beloved property. Recognising the kitchen as the heart of their home, they were determined to create a design that would seamlessly blend the age and charm of the 300-year-old farmhouse with contemporary elements.

Taking on the challenge was Nick Logue of Somerville. Here, he takes us on a tour of the stunning kitchen, which won a much coveted studioLine Design Award in Q4 2023.

What can you tell us about the design of the kitchen?

When it comes to designing a kitchen, the style, colours and materials all combine to help define the overall look and feel of the space. In this case, the homeowners chose the Penshurst kitchen from long-standing British firm Stoneham. The furniture is a contemporary take on a classic Shaker look, which adds a subtle touch of character to the kitchen.

The base and wall cabinets are painted in a white-grey shade called Cashmere – a timeless backdrop that will easily adapt should they redecorate the room in the future. However, the couple wanted to create a focal point with the island, so decided on the deep rich shade of Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue. This contrasting colour not only adds visual interest but also highlights the island as the statement feature in the room.

For the worktops, the homeowners chose Staron, a durable and versatile solid surface material that is strong and resistant to stains. It is also seamless with no joins or crevices for dirt to hide in, so is hygienic and easy to keep clean. After some discussion, they went for a neutral white finish called Morning Sky, apart from on the circular dining table, which strikes a fantastic contrast in a dark grey shade called Tempest Caviar.

The kitchen design includes some stylish oak accents, including custom wine racks at either end of the full-height cupboards, plus pull-out oak trays and chopping boards between the cabinets on the sink run. The wood adds a touch of a rustic farmhouse feel and helps to break up the neutral colour palette.

How did you make the kitchen sociable?

To enhance the sociability of the space, we added Siemens slim KU20WVHF0G wine cooler to the island. This allows for easy access to chilled beverages and is a convenient addition for when the homeowners are entertaining. Moreover, the raised circular table at one end of the island not only adds visual interest but was specifically designed as a place for guests to gather and engage the cook in conversation. Whether it’s enjoying a quick breakfast or having a cup of coffee with friends, this circular table creates a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

What are the storage highlights of this kitchen?

Storage is a key component of any kitchen and this one was no exception. After learning how the couple like to cook and to eat, we created and installed a custom-made freestanding pantry to the left of the sink run. This beautifully crafted cupboard boasts oak shelves, engraved ‘treat’ drawers and thoughtfully designed built-in spice racks. In short, it is a well-organised haven for all their culinary essentials, ensuring easy access and maximum convenience.

Another hidden gem is the hot drinks station, placed at the opposite end of the sink run. This space houses the homeowner’s prized coffee machine and kettle, cleverly concealed behind bi-fold doors that tuck away to one side, allowing for easy access. It is also located well away from the working area of the kitchen, so guests can make drinks without getting in the cook’s away.

What appliances did the homeowners select?

Appliances are key to the functionality of a kitchen – and it’s paramount they’re selected because they match a client’s cooking style. In this kitchen a large and versatile island takes centre stage and it is fitted with a Siemens EX877NX68E induction hob with integrated ventilation. This removes the need for an overhead extractor, freeing up sightlines and creating a cleaner, minimalist look which enhances the overall aesthetic of the kitchen.

The Siemens HS958GED1B full-size combi-steam oven and the CM978GNB1B compact oven with microwave are built into the cabinetry behind the island, offering enhanced cooking flexibility. Tucked underneath the compact oven is the BI710C1B1B warming drawer, which is ideal for keeping dishes warm until it’s time to serve, adding another layer of convenience to this kitchen.

Either side of the bank of ovens is a full-height larder fridge and freezer (KI81RADE0G and GI81NHCE0G), providing ample storage space for both fresh and frozen foods. Once again, this is an essential for a couple who love to entertain. Similarly, no cook’s kitchen is complete without a full-size dishwasher and the integrated SN87Y801BE model is conveniently located to the right-hand-side of the butler sink.
