A clever design featuring Siemens appliances helps this elegant bespoke kitchen function and flow. The Kitchen Company Uxbridge, an independent studio, was hired to design and create a one-of-a-kind kitchen featuring high-quality appliances and a uniquely shaped central island. Siemens had the opportunity to sit down with the talented designer Ken Lobo and learn about his process, and how he achieved the impressive end result. From choosing the perfect materials, to selecting the best layout, Ken’s attention to detail and creativity truly shines through in this beautiful and functional kitchen. |
How did you get involved in this kitchen design project?
The clients’ old kitchen, located in a spacious house in Buckinghamshire, was not inherently flawed. However, its wooden-fronted furniture was designed and fitted many years ago and looked very dated and lacked the modern appeal that the clients wanted.
The Kitchen Company captured the clients’ attention because we offer top-of-the-line furniture and appliances from leading British and German manufacturers. Our highly skilled team was also a great selling point. We understand that a kitchen is more than just a place to cook; it’s a space where families come together, memories are made, and inspiration strikes. That’s why we take pride in designing and fitting kitchens that not only look great but also function seamlessly. We work with our clients to understand their unique needs and preferences and turn their vision into reality.
Tell us about the kitchen island - how did the design take shape?
The room was long and narrow, which presented a challenge for incorporating a kitchen island. To ensure there was enough room to move around it, we created a bespoke island with a unique shape. The island starts with a large radius and gradually narrows down, resembling a keyhole or the number 9 from an overhead view. This not only made the island fit the space available, but it also became one of the most noteworthy features of the overall design.
Another remarkable aspect of the island is the round lower table, made from translucent quartzite. The way light interacts with the natural stone creates a visual display that adds depth and character to the space. The island also features a breakfast bar and a lower dining area, making it a functional and aesthetically pleasing addition to the room.
What other design features make this kitchen special?
The renovation project included a significant transformation of the space housing the ovens. We worked closely with the builders to ensure that the space was not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional. This involved building out the wall slightly and slotting the ovens into it, which required precise measurements.
To further enhance the space’s functionality, we adjusted the ovens’ height to suit the clients’ heights and added storage above and below them. This provided additional storage space and a cohesive look for the entire kitchen.
Which Siemens products did the homeowners choose?
As a fan of Siemens products, I recommended some appliances to my clients for their review. They chose a built-in oven with a steam function (model HS858GXB6B) along with a micro-combi oven (CM878G4B6B) and warming drawer (BI630CNS1B). They also opted for the ER3A6AD70 gas hob, and EX675LXV1E induction hob, both part of the Domino series, along with the LC91KWW69B wall-mounted cooker hood.
Tell us about the tall units to the left of the ovens.
This larder unit is a versatile storage solution designed to cater to the unique needs of clients. It is divided in the centre and has two doors on either side. Each pair opens together, providing easy access to dry groceries, appliances (such as a coffee machine and toaster), and a breakfast area. Below the doors, we added drawers, some of which are compartmentalized for utensils, ensuring that the clients’ kitchen stays organised and clutter-free. The remaining drawers are flexible and can be used according to the clients’ unique requirements.
What did the client like most?
The clients were thrilled with everything, as it was so different from what they had experienced before!
